During Amsterdam Dance Event The Rest is Noise is keen to explore the boundaries of dance music. For this years edition we present an evening that awakens the senses with two acts that are a league on their own. Big sounds, emotions and true artistry is what binds them. Headlining the night is Tim Hecker who will present his latest live installment of 'Konoyo'. Caterina Barbieri & Ruben Spini present their AV show titled 'Time-blind'.
Tim Hecker recently dropped his ninth album 'Konoyo', a record largely recorded during several trips to Japan where he collaborated with members of the gagaku ensemble Tokyo Gakuso. Gagaku music is the imperial court soundtrack of Japan, a mix of coiling flute melodies, drums, strings and a 17-pipe horn called the shō. Hecker takes these instruments and the spiritual sounds they produce, adding his own sense of brilliance, serving up dynamic sonic landscapes that are truly unique for experimental ambient music in this vein.
Italian composer Caterina Barbieri and AV artist Ruben Spini form a hallucinating symbiosis that is as sonically complex as it’s visually stunning. Barbieri uses sequencing techniques to derive spellbinding songs from her modular instruments, pushing them to full capacity, sketching radical, deep-diving electro-acoustic panoramas. Live it’s a staggering experience to feel, hear and see how she mastered her monophonic instruments, using them to create songs in the classic structure as we know it, yet producing them in unorthodox and immersive ways.
Tim Hecker bracht onlangs zijn negende album 'Konoyo' uit, een plaat die werd opgenomen tijdens verschillende reizen naar Japan, waar Hecker samenwerkte met het gagaku-ensemble Tokyo Gakuso. Gagaku-muziek is de soundtrack van het keizerlijke hof van Japan, een mix van rollende fluitmelodieën, drums, strijkers en de shō, een mondorgel van bamboe dat super verfijnde klanken produceert. Hecker gebruikt deze traditionele instrumenten en voegt er zijn eigen, bekende brille aan toe, met als resultaat een experimenteel maar dynamisch ambient-geluid.
Op het podium vullen de Italiaanse componist Caterina Barbieri en audiovisueel kunstenaar Ruben Spini elkaar perfect aan. Samen presenteren ze 'Time-blind', een hallucinante liveshow die zowel visueel als muzikaal van een betoverend hoog niveau is. Barbieri gebruikt haar modulaire synthesizers op een compleet unieke manier. Waar veel van haar collega’s vaak een indrukwekkende, steeds maar door walsende geluidsbrij laten horen, heeft de Italiaanse een manier gevonden om songs met kop en staart te produceren, terwijl ze zelf ook de vocalen voor haar rekening neemt. Live is dit een zinnenprikkelende ervaring die je niet snel vergeet.
