Inclusivity and diversity… What is it to you?
I grew up in Amersfoort. Little kids always seem to find a reason to bully the odd one out, for me it was the curly mess on my head.
In primary school my ‘friends’ suddenly decided I wasn’t worth being their friend anymore. These things are unfortunately not rare among kids, and even adults.
Not being accepted for who I am made a big impact on me. I still struggle with insecurities about ‘being good enough’, but I have managed to accept them for what they are: shadows of the past, when I was a child.
What I find hard to accept is that us adults can be just as mean at times. That we judge, without even bothering to get to know the real person behind the facade. Why do we feel the need to place ourselves above another?
I will be brutally honest with you. I find it ridiculous that we have to talk about diversity and inclusivity, and yet it is a hot subject in Dutch society (and across the world) at the moment. Why are another’s cultural values, sexual orientation or perspective so incomprehensible for some people? Why is there such a need for conflict opposed to ‘agreeing to disagree’?
At JACK we bring people together. To get to know each other, to learn from one another, and to find a connection together. A connection through music, through art or a through simple conversation. Human to human. Appreciating the beauty of our different colours, as one of the sources of art in our world.
JACK Amsterdam is a place where we leave our judgements outside and find brotherhood inside. Music and culture brings us together. We dance together on music, Muslims, Cristians, Atheists, Buddhists, hetero, gay, or transgender. Suddenly it doesn’t matter anymore who you love, what you believe or which colour shines through you. It’s art. We find ourselves in a safe space nurtured by freedom and open heartedness.
I know I’m an ambitious dreamer, but I simply don’t accept reality as it is today. Together we can break this barrier and bring a positive message to Amsterdam and the rest of the Netherlands. Who knows, maybe even further?
