2011 has seen Shifted rise swiftly from the murky shadows of UK Techno. Little is known of who the cryptic producer is, but rest assured of his credentials. 'Drained', his first of two Eps on Luke Slater's esteemed Mote Evolver imprint instantly grabbed the attention of the Techno fraternity. A heavy, muscular and stripped sound was born from what was to become one of 2011's most exciting Techno artists. Releases under the pseudonyms Pacific Blue and Relay soon followed, continuing along Shifted's Techno lines, but built on a deeper, more understated sound.

Appearing on a limited blue vinyl, 'Industry Part 1 & 2' was the opening release on the Pacific Blue 12” series, with remixes following from Sandwell District artists Rrose and Silent Servant at the tail of 2011. Shifted's growing demand as a remixer himself led to reworks of UK Techno legends The Black Dog as well as peers Sigha and Cio D'Or amongst others. Several 'secret' white labels were also released with which no name was attributed.

2011 also saw the launch of his Avian imprint. Confirming the calibre of Shifted's productions, the début (vinyl only) release 'AVN #001' struck a chord with its thudding drums and deep, pulsating stabs. The EP received weekly plays from Techno's top players and became a record that didn’t leave the bag. The equally illusive London-based producer, Ventress, laid down the follow-up release cementing the Avian label as 'one to watch' in 2012. With these productions and remixes gaining warranted attention on the dancefloor, Shifted's gig diary matured accordingly, DJing at some of the world's best clubs including the fabled Berghain (Berlin) and Fabric (London).

Looking forward, Shifted continues on from his second Mote Evolver 12”, 'Control', with his début album being released on the label in March 2012. Shifted has found home from home on the illustrious label and fits perfectly into its tough, hypnotic and often experimental style of Techno. On top of the Mote Evolver LP, 2012 will bring another solo production under the Pacific Blue alias, a remix for Planetary Assault Systems and undisclosed activity on his own Avian imprint.

Exciting stories without big words

When you tell a story you explain something which has engaged you, something which has moved you. Telling good stories is certainly not easy, particularly if you don’t use words. Just like a good DJ set, storytelling is all about creating an arc, putting listeners under a spell and giving the feeling that this story doesn’t have to come to an end. Telling a story with these attributes without using words? How it’s possible is demonstrated by DJ and producer Markus Suckut.

Markus’ own musical history began in 1999, at the brink of the new millennium an interest in electronic music was awakened in the young, Germany-based Markus. At the time it was less about committing to one musical direction, than about the excitement of DJing and testing sonic limits. Carried along by the excitement of these
inital impressions Markus began to teach himself to mix and within a few short years his first productions followed.

It’s hard to categorise someone who himself detests thinking about music in narrow-minded categories and who takes influence from many different styles of music. His own productions are best described plainly and simply with the word techno, techno which often and willingly becomes dub. His sets are wide reaching, and even if they have a common basis it’s difficult to describe what exactly they have in common. Perhaps it is soul, a bit of dreaminess and a tendency towards melancholy that best characterise Markus and his music.

Good things take time. A good story can’t be told in passing; accordingly Markus Suckut can be seen as one of the most vocal opponents of short sets, and of a club
culture where the next DJ jostles impatiently in the booth waiting impatiently for the start of their own set. To play in his own style, leading the crowd and casting a spell
over it, delighting listeners with records selections that go beyond the remit of any kind of DJ charts, this is his world. And in the company of someone who loves to
listen to elaborate stories, who detects subtlety while simultaneously appreciating current trends, the listener is in very good hands with both his productions and his sets.

There is something positively odd about Milo Moraes’s path so far; something that has helped shape one of Utrecht’s most promising new faces into an artist valued both in and outside of his own hometown. As a trained and experienced jazz musician hailing from a distinctively musical family, deciding to go with techno might not at first seem like the “logical” move. However, after watching Plastikman perform and getting a glimpse of the endless creative possibilities the genre offered, electronic music firmly caught Milo’s attention. Since then he’s been ambitiously indulging himself in it and taking a broad, explorative route; learning where he can and improving his skills along the way.

Now, a mere couple of years after winning the infamous TWSTD DJ Contest, he has played opening, closing and headlining slots at most major venues around the Netherlands, sharing line-ups with the likes of Sandwell District, DVS1, Lucy and Len Faki. Milo holds a residency at Club Poema in Utrecht, is a frequent guest artist at a number of nationwide events and has played Rockit Open Air, Obsession Outdoor Festival, Lief Festival, Sugar Factory, Studio 80 and Tivoli. He also runs his own night at Poema, “Milo Moraes invites...”, bringing renowned (inter)national names to Utrecht and providing them with a great platform to showcase their sounds.

Taking into account the fact that he has kept a low profile when it comes to putting out music himself, his achievements so far may rightfully be called impressive. With his sights firmly set on getting into the studio as soon as possible, taking his musicality, live experience and DJ know-how with him, Milo’s future prospects are looking good indeed.
